Early in 2001, an anonymous donor approached St. Elisabeth Episcopal Church with a sizable contribution toward the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house. Taking the idea one step further, the church's Outreach Committee suggested the Habitat house become a communal project of all Glencoe congregations. Glencoe Interfaith Builders was thus born, the first such collaboration in the history of Lake County Habitat.


Member congregations include AM Shalom, Congregation Hakafa, Glencoe Union Church, North Shore Congregation Israel, North Shore United Methodist Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Elisabeth Episcopal Church, and St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.

In March of 2001, a Steering Committee of representatives from each congregation sat down together for the first time to focus on the task of sponsoring and building a Habitat house. Fundraising and volunteer recruitment followed in short order. Then between the Fall of 2001 and the Spring of 2002, builders from each congregation, and the community at large, worked long hours together. On May 5th, 2002, Glencoe Interfaith Builders and Lake County Habitat proudly dedicated their first house, in the city of North Chicago.

Spurred by the success of its first house, Glencoe Interfaith Builders is embarking on building another house being built in Waukegan as part of an entire Habitat Community of some 25 dwellings.
